Oral cancer starts in the mouth and can interfere with the ability to breath, talk, eat, chew or swallow. When found early, treatment of oral cancer is likely to be successful. Each year in the U.S alone, approximately 34,000 individuals are newly diagnosed with oral cancer that kills more people than does cervical cancer, malignant melanoma, or Hodgkin’s disease. Oral cancers usually involve the tongue, lips, floor of the mouth, soft palate, tonsils, salivary glands, or back of the throat. In the US , more than 90% of oral and pharyngeal cancers occur in individuals over 45 years of age; with males more likely than women to develop.

The good news: it can be found early in its development with a comprehensive oral cancer examination that takes less than 10 minutes!

While there's no proven way to prevent mouth cancer, you can reduce your risk of mouth cancer if you:

Stop using tobacco or don't start

Drink alcohol in moderation only, if at all.

Avoid excessive sun exposure to your lips.

Avoid HPV infection.

Eat a healthy diet.

Regular dental check-ups, including an examination of the entire mouth, are essential in the early detection of cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions.  As part of a routine dental exam, ask your dentist to inspect your entire mouth for abnormal areas that may indicate mouth cancer or precancerous changes.
