Integrative Restoration Yoga Nidra© (iRest) is a present-day adaptation of the ancient practice of Yoga Nidra. It provides us with a meditative form of self-inquiry that effectively reduces anxiety, depression, PTSD, and chronic pain.
During iRest© we remain alert and attentive, welcoming the felt-sense of emotions, cognitions and beliefs while entering deep states of reflective relaxation. It helps us to awaken to our essential nature and recognize our conditioned patterns in a way that leads to acceptance, awareness and well-being. We learn to work with naturally arising thoughts to dissolve preoccupations within the body while welcoming insight and transcendence. iRest© offers tools we can use to obtain first-hand awareness of what and who we are and how the universe works. The path of meditation is explored in a user-friendly, seamless and practical way.
The practice was created by Richard Miller Ph.D, who is the founder of the iRest© Institute and the co-founder of the International Association of Yoga Therapists. It is based on the integration of eastern teachings of yoga, Taoism, Adavaita, Buddhism, and the western teachings from the Judeo-Christian traditions, along with many years of research and elements of philosophy and psychology. In 2006 the Department of Defense conducted research at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on the efficacy of the iRest© protocol and in 2010 it was endorsed by the U.S. Army Surgeon General and Defense Center of Excellence as a complementary and alternative medicine.
I became an Integrative Restoration Yoga Nidra© teacher when I realized that it was not something that is offered locally. I knew that our unique community would benefit greatly from such an effective evidence-based transformative practice. I would like to reach out not only to veterans, but to public service members, those who have experienced trauma, anxiety and depression; as well as those who are simply interested in exploring this beautiful form of healing.
This course will begin in January and run for six weeks on both Monday afternoons and Thursday evenings. Participants will learn foundational steps, enjoy a 40 minute meditation, and be included in debrief activities to foster and enhanced personal practice. I look forward to connecting when the time is right for you.
