Quench Your Thirst, Creatively

The summer season always provides plenty of opportunity for fun in the sun. On the other hand, the hazy, humid, and hot days of summer can lower energy levels and add stress. No matter what awaits you this warm season, staying hydrated is so important for all age groups.

Reaching for sugary or caffeinated beverages can stimulate the release of the stress hormone cortisol, which can deplete our body’s supply of Vitamins B and C, Calcium, and Magnesium.

Water is the best to quench your thirst! And infusing water with fruits, veggies, spices and herbs can make it not only refreshing but also delicious. Creating your own infused water at home can be a whimsical experience; the spectrum of flavors you create can reflect your taste buds, inspiration and even gardening skills. And involving kids could help bring exploration and discussion for a fun activity.

All you need is a personal infusion bottle or simple glass pitcher, filtered water of your choosing, and of course, your flavors.


My favorite flavor combinations:

  • Cucumber, watermelon, and cilantro

  • Lemon, orange, peppermint and fennel (helps digestion!)

  • Raspberry and chocolate mint

  • Rosemary, mint and lemon

  • Orange and vanilla bean (creamscicle, yum!)

  • Apple, lemon and cinnamon sticks


Hints that have helped me in my infusion practice:

  • Slice or cube fruit the veggies thinly for maximum flavor release

  • Peel when possible…citrus can come across bitter

  • Add essential oils for added health and wellness benefits (2drops/litre)

  • Don’t be afraid to muddle your berries and mint to release the flavor

  • Grow your own! Use edible flowers and herbs from your garden

Let the water sit in refrigerator for a few hours, and enjoy!
